American History X +4
A young man does a report for history on Mein Kampf and has to write a new one, on his white supremacist brother. During the course of the movie they take an angry man’s life and show its effect on those around him and how he became that way.
One of the criteria for a good movie by my ratings is to show something real about the human condition; this does that.
It’s not a happy movie, there is no good romance and it is certainly not a thriller and should not be viewed by young children. The drama however it’s intense and suspenseful as we watch their lives of frustration about their situation and how they equate it to being the fault of those of all other races instead of their own internal dialog. Then the young man gets shot by a black man in the high school toilet as the end of his story is read: “Hate is baggage, life is too short to be pissed off all the time; it’s just not worth it.”
Rating 4 out of 5 stars for the drama and I would have liked to give it 1 more star but just can’t; just too much hate.
